a daily summer…

Sep 16, 2019

As a fun challenge to myself, I started a daily photo project to document life this past summer with my family. Before my oldest was born, I had a camera with me every day and was always taking photos of life as it was happening. About the time my son turned one and started walking, I realized that while I loved capturing his every move with a camera I couldn’t keep up with letting him be free to move about the city and keeping track of all of our baby gear and an expensive camera on top of it. (We lived in NYC and I literally traveled with a ton of stuff in tow in my stroller already…worrying about a camera in there just seemed like the easiest thing to give up at the time. This is also about the time I got an iphone, so I now had a very portable camera with me too.) Fast forward over 8 years (my son is 9 1/2 now) and I never really went back to the rhythm of taking daily photos. I MISSED IT SO MUCH! I didn’t even realize how much I missed it until I made the commitment to do it again. Let’s be clear, there are plenty of photos of my kids…thousands and thousands a year have been taken of each of them…lots with an iphone and still plenty with my real camera too. But taking out my big camera every day brings me a different kind of joy and satisfaction that probably only makes sense to me. I’d like to thank the lack of a diaper bag for the first time in 9 1/2 years for helping to make this happen (could not have told you how much those diapers and wipes took up so much space in my physical life until I didn’t have them any more). If you follow me on Instagram, thank you for being a part of our summer together. Not sure I can make a daily fall project happen, but some version of it will have to take place. For now, here are some of my favorites from “a daily summer”…
